Plan & Prepare

Trails are graded as mainly grade 2 with sections of grade 3.  There are sections of the trail that are easier to ride than others with several sections of rural roads where other vehicles and stock and may be encountered grazing the road sides.

You will need an average level of fitness with above average off road bike skills.

Many trail sections are in wilderness areas with limited cell phone coverage, many activity operators provide emergency location devices for hire, it is recommended that one device is carried with each party.

Be prepared and dress for seasonal weather condition, don’t forget to check the forecast.

Mountain bikes with front suspension are recommended for riding the trail.

There is one ford that may flood in heavy rain close to Horopito Village on the Ohakune Old Coach road section of the trail. Do not attempt to cross when water is flowing over the ford.  There is a deep hazardous pool downstream of the ford.  Please take care.

You will need to plan your trip to include personal supplies, water for a day’s riding and of course food for the duration of your journey.  If self supported you will need to book transport options including the river jet boat.  Make sure your have a basic repair kit and can join a broken chain and repair a puncture.

There are several accommodation options along the way with food supplies and cafes limited to several small settlements.  Toilets and drinking water are available at key locations, be prepared to treat your own drinking water.  Click here for details of service providers along the trail.
